It was good to hear that the first mailing elisited a good response in terms of donations and individuals interested in working to Save Banning Ranch. I think of Banning Ranch as Newport’s polar bear, our endangered species. Saving Banning is our opportunity to think globally and act locally. I look forward to the Feb. 20 pot luck and “demonstration”

Reasons to save Banning from Kevin
I notice that the developer has applied for Measure M funds, after stating that they would not ask for “a dime of public money” for their development project.
The park is located on 18.9 acres at the northwest corner of Superior Avenue and West Pacific Coast Highway.
The meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the City of Newport Beach Council Chambers at 3300 Newport Boulevard, Newport Beach, CA 92663.
The project is turning out to be an illegal wedge for a proposed development. The city of Newport Beach is basically doing the developer’s bidding, without stating that fact. In spite of Caltrans objections and guidelines, and in defiance of common sense, the project contains a larger than needed intersection (4-lanes) with a traffic signal on Pacific Coast Highway for access to the park. The real and unstated purpose of the road is to serve the development of Banning Ranch (the property that borders California Seabreeze). The Sunset Ridge project is damaging because key wetlands habitat (full of native plants and the federally protected gnatcatcher) would be paved by the access road. Also, the proposed traffic signal would increase traffic congestion on Pacific Coast Highway.
